What are programs permitted to do re. quota and reversions in each CaRMS match?

 The following grid was created in an effort to assist with questions programs may have regarding what is and what is not permitted when it comes to quota and reversions in each CaRMS match. 

 MATCH   GUIDELINES   DEFINITIONS 

Spring Subspecialty Residency Match (SSRM) 
  1. Programs can change the quota to quota unknown.
  2. Programs can keep the quota and donate the quota via reversions. 
    • If the program decides to donate quota via reversions, it will go unfilled if the receiver doesn't fill it. 
  3. Programs can also withdraw the program entirely.

Programs in all the above scenarios will not display in the list of unfilled positions. 


Quota unknown: 

The number of positions has not yet been finalized and is not zero. This is typically used when a program may receive a position via reversion but does not initially have a position associated with it.  

R-1 Main Residency Match - Second Iteration 
  1. Programs cannot lower quota to zero in this match 
    •  Any positions that remain unfilled after the first iteration must be made available in the second iteration, so programs are not able to reduce their quota to zero. Programs should review the applications they receive and rank the candidates they feel would be suitable for their program. If they determine that none of the applicants are suitable for the position, they are not required to rank them and can submit a blank rank order list. In that case, if no applicants are ranked, the position would simply remain unfilled when the match is run. 
  2. If a program has multiple training sites within the same program, unfilled positions from one site can be reverted to another site via reversions.
    • Reversions also allow for any unfilled positions to move to a different program entirely, if needed.
